Can Manchester United win the league?

Currently the Red Devils reside at the top of the league with reigning English Premier League champions Liverpool on 33 points after 16 matches.

Despite a trashing earlier in the season versus Aston Villa (7-2) Liverpool has the comfortable goal difference of 17 goals, to United's nine.

United's start to the 2020/2021 season was lackluster to say the least but they have been able to string together 10 consecutive games without a defeat, to position themselves as title challengers.

United's season start also saw them dealing with the summer scandal of their captain Harry Maguire being arrested and charge in a foreign country.

Their inconsistent star and yet to live up to his World Cup-winning hype Paul Pogba being quarantined after tested positive with COVID-19, as well as Williams and Aaron being quarantine for travelling outside of their approved locations.

United's Goalkeepers union was getting additional, unnecessary attention with Romero's wife, rightfully calling out United on their approach to denying his transfer after he won them their last trophy.

Henderson was given a large 150k weekly improved contract to keep him at United and now was being talked about as a replacement for De Gea.

Pundits were beginning to announce that De Gea was past his best after another season of elementary errors and subpar performance from the once world class custodian.

Contract talks around Pogba circulated once again, as well as rumours about his departure; providimng unnecessary attention and distraction in the Red Devils' camp.

The biggest talking point surrounding United during the summer was the potential swoop of Borussia Dortmund and England International forward Jaden Sancho.

After days of negotiation between Dortmund and United, Ed Woodward and his team failed to get their man and the 20-year-old talisman remained in Germany. At least for now.

So back to the question, Can Manchester United win the league?

Depends.

There is a lot to be said about consistency, defending, individual player performance and injury records.

Manchester United under Ole Gunna Solskjaer tend to be inconsistent but recently Ole has been consistent with his lineup and we are seeing a more impressive United.

Consistency comes from players being confident. it took a while for United to find their confidence but they know now they can go into a game and out score any opponent. The problem or the challenge United need to work on to continue on their title challenge is their defense.

Lindelöf and Maguire seems to be Ole's preferred partnership and honestly, he doesn't have much better options. Tuanzebe had a wonderful performance against PSG and have set to break back into the lineup due to minor injuries. Bailly has seem to find himself back in the lineup now that Lindelöf is out injured, but the question is... Would he stay fit?

Rojo and Jones are just collecting a cheque at this point and really should be transferred ASAP. This leaves United with 3 center defenders of which one is injury prone, one is slow and the other needs a partner to match his ice cold confidence.

We all know the impact that Bruno has made on the squad .That is not in question or doubt here but Bruno is one player and honestly United could do with two more players of his personality and quality. So keeping Bruno injury free would be good for United.

The key path to continuing to challenge for the title is United improving their defense. Strong defense wins titles, take a look at the United of days gone by. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were the core of our title winning defenses and they were feared because of how they matched each other.

So United can win a title if they stay consistent, injury free and can improve their defense.
