Caribbean footballers are in line for a massive payday as the inaugural Islands Cup football tournament is scheduled to kick off from August 1 2021 until October 10 in various countries across the region.
Ten franchises will vie over three months to be crowned champions of the Caribbean and win the grand prize of $3,000,000.00 (USD).
Caribbean players are slated to earn a salary of $5000.00 (USD) a month, plus several incentives and bonuses for performances and achieving particular objectives.
The first set of players for this historic event were recently selected and three Barbadians, who ply their trade in the domestic Barbados Football Association (BFA) Premier League, were amongst the initial selectees.
Weymouth Wales center back Ramar Millar, Ellerton FC captain Shakille Belle and the University of the West Indies (UWI) and national U20 goalkeeper Shaquan Phillips have been selected to represent the Barbados Challengers.
However, it is understood that other players from the island are in a position to be selected by the other franchises.
The Challengers will be managed by former UWI Premier League manager and former England cricketer Roland Butcher and their coaches will be former England internationals Sol Campbell and Andy Cole.
Campbell and Cole make up a list of former professional players who will be playing and coaching in the tournament.
World Cup winner Francesco Totti, along with UEFA Champions League winners Samuel Eto’o, Arjen Robben and Patrice Evra are some of the names expected to grace the football pitches of the Caribbean.
The 10 franchises listed to participate in the tournament are; Brazil Samba Warriors, FC Combined Islands, AS Guyana Oilers FC, As Espanola Manics, French Connection FC, SC Colombia Tapirs, Jamaica Ruffnecks, TNT Soca Rivals FC, Barbados Challengers and Suriname Gladiators.
