February 6th, 2021 was a special day for Barbados teenage football sensation Thierry Gale.
The national forward scored his first goal in the OTP Bank Liga, also known as the Hungarian Premier League.
Gale came on in the second half after his team, Budapest Honved were down 0-2 to fifth-place Mezokovesd FC.
Mezokovesd scored twice in four minutes, courtesy of goals from Daniel Vadnai in the 23rd minute and Marin Jurina in the 27th minute.
Budapest Honved coach Istvan Pisont grew impatient with his attackers and introduced Gale in the 73rd minute for fellow forward Dominik Nagy.
Gale’s impact was immediate as he caused havoc with his pace and skill on the left hand side, but the Mezokovesd defense remained discipline and determined to keep a clean sheet.
The special moment came for the 18-year-old in the 86th minute. An in-swinging cross from the right flank by Krisztian Tamas was met by Gale at the far post, who tapped-in from inside the six-yard box.
Gale’s goal made for an exciting climax, however Budapest Honved failed to find that equalizing goal and fell to their eighth defeat of the season, which leaves them 10th in the 12 team table, with just 20 points from 22 matches.
After the match Gale said it was a disappointing result but he expects things to turn around soon, starting from this Wednesday when they take on III Keruleti TVE in the Round of 32 in the Magyar Kupa (The Hungarian Cup).
This match was just Gale’s second since returning to Hungary from his holiday in Barbados.
Gale explained due to his passage via England, he had to spend an extended period in quarantine, and that resulted in less minutes in the first team to date, however he’s optimistic that may change soon.
“From the start of my preseason I was doing really well when I came out of quarantine. During games against each other in practice I felt really good and was back to how I was at the start of the season.
I’m working to be in the starting 11, but this is how it works and I’ll be taking my chances each time I get them”, said Gale.
