Teenage goalkeeper keen to showcase talent on the big stage

Exposure and a step towards the future.

That is Shaquan Phillips’ view, following his selection for the Barbados Challengers in the inaugural Islands Cup football tournament, scheduled to begin on August 1, 2021 until October 10 in the Caribbean.

Phillips is one of three Barbadians selected in the initial draft of players, for the 10 team tournament.

Joining the University of the West Indies goalkeeper on the Challengers’ roster are former national U17 team mates center back Ramar Millar and the fleet-footed forward Shakille Belle from Premier League outfits Weymouth Wales and Ellerton FC respectively.

This talented trio will be joined by some of the region’s finest talents and a number of former professional footballers, where their aim will be to make history, while claiming the $3,000,000.00 (USD) grand prize.

Phillips and his team mates are slated to earn a salary of $10,000.00 (BDS) a month plus incentives, however the Pro Shottas graduate said the money is not his primary focus.

“The selection will definitely help with my development and hopefully scouts will see my ability and it is one step in the right direction to become a professional football player”, said Phillips.

With just two seasons under his belt in the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Premier League, Phillips is seen as a player of great potential.

From his days at the George Lamming Primary School, then onto the Lester Vaughn School, Phillips’ consistent and quality performances earned him a place on the national U15, U17 and U20 teams, where he has made over 15 international appearances at just 18 years old.

The UWI custodian expressed gratitude to his club members for their support, guidance and trust over the last two seasons, for, he believes they are a hugely responsible for his selection to the Challengers franchise.

“The assistance I received from my UWI Blackbirds’ coaches Fabian Massiah and Ricardo “Cracker” Goddard, and Roland Butcher who was Head of Football at UWI contributed to me getting this opportunity.
They provided me with early opportunities to play in the Premier League at a very young age.”

The Deans Village resident sees his opportunity selflessly. He said, the experience will be fantastic for the development of the local game.

He said having the opportunity to rub shoulders and learn from some of the game’s best players will serve as an inspiration for other young Barbadian players.
